Hyderabad: at least 19 passengers lost their lives and several others were seriously injured when a truck carrying gravel struck a TSRTC bus near the village of Mirzaguda in the Chevella mandal of Rangareddy district on Monday morning.
The incident occurred on the Hyderabad–Bijapur National Highway as the gravel truck collided with a bus from the Tandur depot. Since it was the bus's first trip, many passengers had boarded. As the bus approached Mirzaguda, a speeding tipper truck carrying gravel collided with it, resulting in the tipper overturning and its entire load spilling onto the bus.
The accident was extremely serious, resulting in the complete crushing of the front part of the bus and the spillage of tons of gravel, which trapped several passengers inside and led to fatalities. Both the bus driver and the tipper truck driver died instantly.
Authorities and rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene and initiated extensive relief efforts, utilising three JCBs to clear away the debris and rescue survivors.
Many others suffered severe injuries and were transported to Chevella Government Hospital. Medical professionals reported that the condition of five of the victims is critical.
At the time of the crash, it was reported that there were 72 passengers on the bus. The majority consisted of students and workers. The dead included ten women, eight men, and a child. Police have identified 13 of the dead bodies.
Witnesses recalled the scene as devastating, with cries for help echoing amidst the wreckage of twisted metal and piles of gravel.
CM expresses shock, announces Rs7 lakh ex-gratia
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was shocked to learn about the devastating road accident. The Chief Minister instructed the officials to immediately reach the spot and take necessary relief measures. The officials were ordered to get the complete details of the road accident and update him from time to time.
Revanth Reddy instructed Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao, DGP Shivadhar Reddy to shift all the injured persons in the bus mishap to Hyderabad for better medical treatment. The top officials were also instructed to visit the accident spot with available ministers immediately.
He ordered that emergency medical assistance should be provided to save the lives of those involved in the accident as well as sufficient ambulance and medical personnel .
Revanth Reddy ordered special arrangements to be made at Gandhi and Osmania hospitals to provide adequate treatment to those injured in the accident.
"The R&B is taking action to identify black spots to prevent road accidents in Telangana. Transport department to take serious action on fitness of buses. We will investigate the incident and take action against those responsible," he said. Minister Sridhar Babu said the government will stand by every affected family in all possible ways. The injured are being provided with the best possible medical treatment.
PM condoles mishap victims, announces Rs2 lakh ex-gratia Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the loss of lives due to a road accident. Modi also wished speedy recovery of those injured in the mishap.
The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia from PMNRF of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured. Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan has expressed deep anguish over the loss of lives in the tragic road accident . In his message, the Vice-President said that the loss of lives in the tragic accident is deeply distressing.
